D.J. Johnson Robert Griffith. Robert Griffith D. J. Johnson. The names sound quite similar don't they? Well not as similar as the 2 Hall of Famers look!!! Our NFL Europe conspiracy theory is this : They are in fact the same person!

The proof in our Cheddar pudding goes back to an incident that took place on a blazing hot Berlin afternoon when during pre-game Preston ran into DJ (see here). Or was it Griff? Who knows? Preston certainly didn't and once again the German beer did the talking. DJ took the Griff compliments in his stride and was probably hoping that would be the last of it. But his travel schedule took him to Murrayfield the next week, and after that Dusseldorf where the Claymores were playing so there was no avoiding us again!

"Griff" showed up for the "One-way Bowl" in Amsterdam and was cheddared after the game, but you know it could have been DJ. It could have MJ for all we knew as were high as kites after a huge win. We were all confused. FOX tried to clear it up for us during the 2000 NFL season by having DJ as sideline reporter for numerous Vikings games in which 'Griff' was playing. But we're not convinced, as FOX would only cut to DJ when the Vikings were on offense, so a quick uniform change and 'Griff' is out his Vikings gear into a suit. Hey it's possible! A job for FOX Mulder perhaps ...

As for the 2 players, DJ (David) was a 7th round pick of the Steelers in 1989, becoming a regular starter in 1990 scoring his first and only NFL touchdown on a 26 yard interception return of a Warren Moon pass in a Sunday Night 20-9 victory over the Houston Oilers. He left for Atlanta in 1994 as a free agent where he led the team in interceptions that year. (Sad Preston Trivia: He became the only man in NFL history to intercept 5 passes in a season and not return them for any yardage). He was finished his career with the Cardinals in 1996.

Coincidentally 1996 was the year that Robert Griffith broke through for the Minnesota Vikings. After graduating from San Diego State (where he played for fellow Hall of Famer Al Luginbill) 'Griff' languished in the CFL for a year before signing as a free agent with the Vikings in 1994. His first two season he was a special teams demon (54 tackles) before moving into the starting line-up for good in 1996 where he would register 100 or more tackles for 3 consecutive seasons. In 1998 he was selected All-Pro by Pro Football Weekly and All-Madden but the Pro Bowl eluded him until the 2000 season where he earned a richly deserved starting spot.

Well done guys - but we're still waiting to see the pair of you in the SAME SHOT …

'Griff' finally made the Pro Bowl in 2000 after another sterling season
