PART III : RED MONDAY! |
Mon 2 Oct Wake up in West Kansas. Get back on the I-70. It's straight long and flat and goes on for miles and miles and miles. Not much traffic on the roads. You can sleep at the wheel if you like. |
Manhatten, Kansas! Home of the K-State Wildcats who were victorious over Colorado 2 days before (see part I). It's almost in the 90's out here, but alas the stadium shop is closed. But we hunt down a College Merchandise store in town and give it a good tanning! |
Finally after a 500 mile slog across the farmlands, we arrive in Kansas City, Kansas. Then upon crossing the Missouri River, its now Kansas City, Missouri - home of the Chiefs! |
The sun sets over Arrowhead Stadium (left) and Kaufman Stadium (home of baseball's Royals - right). This is the home of B-B-Q, and the smell of all cooking in the parking lots is heavenly! Just like Frankfurt really! |
Then we track down an old friend, who enjoyed her time in Scotland at a Claymores game back in 99. We are indebted to Mary (far right) and the grand hospitality she and her family provided (husband Paul and son James) for us. After a wee tour of her RV - which frankly made the Madden-cruiser look like a shoebox, it was time to get a-eating! And boy did we chow on some of those fantastic ribs!!! |
After the great feed, it was time to head to the stadium but we got way-laid. What started off innocently as drinking a few shots with some guys in full Red Indian headgear banging drums, then somehow mutated into a ritual sacrifice! It was then that we and another helpless Seahawks lassie, were surrounded by chanting Chiefs fans. A huge staff of fire was ceremonially passed around the crowd, as we pondered the flammable nature of kilts . (We had at this strange worked out that Claymores and Seahawks colours were quite similar). But we survived, drank some more shots, and moved on! |
Nice teepee. |
This is Red Monday. An awesome sight to behold. |
But the Seahawks were not to be intimidated early, as TE Itula Mili pulled in this Jon Kitna pass for a 7-0 lead in the 1st. Would the Cheddar curse continue? |
It was Dennis Miller time indeed, but alas no chance to track the funny man down. It should also have been "It's Aftersun Cream Time!" by the look of our red faces and noses. |
Touchdown Kansas City! It's now 17-14 Seahawks thanks to this Derrick Alexander score. We discovered the cure for the curse. Mary has to take a cigarette break when the Chiefs are in the red zone. She took 3 breaks in total on this night, and got 3 TD's which calculates to a 100% conversion rate. |
The Fire Front Office were sitting right next to us as luck would have it. (Sorry - we're really bad with names as you've probably gathered so our cheddared FO is currently nameless) |
The incomparable Ms Melissa Stark. We know her name. We think she's got some special attributes that enhance her overall performance as ABC's new sideline reporter. |
Mike Cloud (#34) goes in for the winning score as KC go on to win 24-17, meaning the Cheddar Curse on home teams is over, and we're gonna get outta there in one piece! |
Arrowman! Another Hall of Famer like Denver's Barrel-man. It's expensive season for this guy as he has to buy a jersey for each opponent and trash it with arrows. |
And then sometime later, way later we stumbled back to the Holiday Inn across the road from the stadium and crashed. Or smashed their nose in the swimming pool doing handstands if you're Shuggie the Red Nosed Clown! |
