Sunday 20th DECEMBER 1998 (Day 2)

 Time

Diary Entry

2am

The long drive into the night is taking its toll so we stop for a little shut-eye in a gas station parking lot.

4am

On the verge of freezing our nuts off, we head off again down highway 29.

5am

Dead carcass in the road almost puts an end to the trip. Then heavy mist comes of out nowhere and we have no visibility and tiredness to deal with.

6am

Another pit stop. Danville, VA right by the state line. More coffee.

9am

Arrive Charlotte, NC. Quick breakfast and quick change into kilts and it's off to Ericsson stadium. It's very quiet...

The toils of life on the road

10am

Still little sign of life around the stadium. In the small parking lots outside there is little tailgating going on. No free sausage to scrounge. This is quite a change from Washington. Plus we're in hillbilly country now!

No sign of life at Ericsson

1pm

Kickoff. Steve "Touchdown Claymores" Dalgleish turns up to offer moral support.

The Nosebleed section

Steve Bono throws a touchdown. Honestly!

It's Mr "Touchdown Claymores" himself!

4.30pm

Panthers 20 Rams 13. Steve Bono works his Dilferian magic on the Rams with a late INT.

On exiting, somebody actually recognises us from Nightline! Say goodbyes to Steve and Jim and get ready for the long haul to Miami.

4.45pm

Long haul will have to wait - we spot the sign for Hooters, Charlotte!

5.30pm

No Hooters calendars for sale. Bummer. Head south on the interstate into South Carolina.

9pm

Decide to stop for the night after a tired Preston sees a large inflatable "Frosty the Snowman" crossing the interstate. Back-up driver Shuggie is no better - seeing "Dancing Christmas Tress" about the same time. Head into a motel and watch the Minnesota paste Jacksonville 50-10 on ESPN.
