CAMP WRAP PART IV - AROUND THE LEAGUE! |

|
RHEIN FIRE The Fire had the most interesting battle at QB in camp where Phil Stambaugh and Gio Carmazzi both shone. They are likely to both see action in the early going. At RB Pepe Pearson is back, but bruising Jason Brookins looked better in the scrimmages. TE Adam Newman looks like he'll be a focal point of the passing game with WR's Andre Cooper, Dwight Carter and Eddie Hardaway. Defense looks good again with CB's DeShone Mallard and Derrick Gardner back. Other guys to watch on D are DT Gaylon Hyder, LB Scott Zimmerman and S Deke Cooper. Super Manny Burgsmuller is still kicking the short ones well at 51, while P Rodney Williams returns for a 2nd year in the Rheinstadion.
AMSTERDAM ADMIRALS If his Florida form is anything to go by Spergon Wynn will be one of the top QB's in the league in 2001. RB's Clarence Williams and Spencer George both had their moments too. WR's Chris Coleman looks great, while WR Drew O'Connor gives Wynn a big physical target. TE James Hill kept getting open in the scrimmage vs. the Claymores. Defense has two returning stalwarts in DT Jon Kirksey who doesn't get any smaller, and LB Massafumi Kawaguchi who is about a 'Rob Hart' lighter but uses his speed to get all over the field. New faces who impressed included CB Jermaine Smith and LB Brendon Ayanbadejo. Silvio Diliberto will be the national kicker again, with Justin Skinner attempting the long FG's.
FRANKFURT GALAXY Michael Bishop has his ups and downs in the scrimmages but he has all the tools to be a great player this year. He'll be hurt in the early going by the adsence of World Bowl 99 hero WR Andy McCullough who has a bum ankle. McCullough looked great early on, so WR's Damon Savage and Ricky Hall will pick up the slack. On the ground look for RB Corey Walker and Brian Edwards to make contributions. Defensively the Galaxy have a ferocious line, led by returning DT David Hoelscher. Also making plays were DE Dwight Johnson and national DT Daniel Banetka. Other guys to watch for in 2001 are LB Gary Stills and S Tony George - who was sensational in the scrimmage vs. the Dragons. K Stephen Bauer who is attempting to fill Ralf Kleinmann's shoes struggled in camp and Jim Tarle will be used for longer FG's.
BARCELONA DRAGONS Or should it be Barca Broncos given the plethora of Denver guys on this roster. It starts with QB Jarious Jackson who is going to make his share of plays this year. RB's Mike Green and Lloyd Clemons will pick up the rushing slack. The Dragons may have the best wideouts in Mareno Philyaw, Bryan Gilmore and Tony Simmons who showed his NFL class in the scrimmages. Also looking good was WR Eddie Conti who is coming back from a broken leg suffered at Hampden last year. Mexican TE Vincenc Rodriguez has really come on. On D, there's a good set of LB's which includes Troy Pelshak, Corey Atkins and Muadianvita Kazadi. In the secondary S Jeff Popovich and CB Deauntae Brown stood out, while CB Sean Morey who was a WR last year had a mixed camp. K Jesus Angoy is back, while Bill LaFleur will be the punter.
BERLIN THUNDER Jaguars QB Jonathan Quinn really stood out, standing tall in the pocket, making precise crisp throws over the middle. WR's Dwaune Jones and Ahmad Merritt look to be his favourite targets, and will use their speed to get deep on teams. Madre Hill could contend for the rushing tile but he'll have to share some carries with Ricky Brown. Ex Claymores OT Rome Douglas returns. The D-line is led by ex-1st round pick DE Jon Harris. LB Dax Strohmeyer is a run stuffer, assisted by ex-Dragon LB Marc Megna. In the secondary returning S Billy Gustin, is a leader with a great nose for the ball and will be pushing for All-Europe honours in 2001. CB Payton Williams is a dangerous return man too. National K Axel Kruse returns, as does P Brian Moorman, and watch out for K Scott Bentley who have the strongest leg in the league.
