WEEK 9 2003
- CLAYMORES 45 DRAGONS 7
And so it was back to Sitges for a Week 9 encounter with the Dragons. The league schedule makers must love us. Since the inexplicable decision to put us here in Week 1 of 1998, every year since we've been here Week 8 or later. Life is hard. |
![]() |
And if we must go out for a night out in Sitges, we must always attend Tito's for another Montse Masterclass of Catalan dance! |
![]() |
Behind the luminous drinks and pearly white teeth is a well known person enjoying the strange ultraviolet light of Ricky's nightclub. Trust us! |
![]() |
People often ask us what can you expect from a typical night out in Sitges. It is very hard to put into words. |
![]() |
And if we must go out for a night out in Sitges, we must always find the beach at some part of the evening. This would normally involve "beach & sea football" but was shortened to "beach & sea" this year after 2 clowns conspired to lose the football in a nightclub. The sea was not as warm as normal by the way. |

Game Day The trouble with winning streaks is that once you do something stupid and accidentally win the game - you cannot change your routine as long as the streak is good. This can be the only justification on Earth for our latest ensemble. |

Separated at birth - Shuggie and Great Uncle Bulgaria

Not separated at birth - Shuggie and a large inflatable Dragon. |

Pre-game was the usual mix of the Dragons band and some exhilarating gymnastic feats from the Dragons cheerleaders. And yes it does appear that that cheerleader is about 10 feet off the ground with her legs bending upwards!
But there was a game to be played. Or so we thought. It started well for the Claymores yet again. Their 6th touchdown on their opening drive in 9 attempts which is almost ridiculous. QB Craig Nall hit 4 passes to 4 separate receivers for 60 yards, before ended it in style with a deft little shovel pass to Maurice Hicks that the running back took not the end zone from 7 yards. CLAYMORES 7-0 |
Back to back sacks by TJ Bingham and Radell Lockhart on Dragons QB Seth Burford sent the Dragons to a 3 and out - and Nall was back at it again. This time he lofted a 23 yard TD to WR Jon Minardi who jumped over CB Antuan Simmons to get the ball. Then it looked like Scott Couper had made his 100th catch, with a celebratory grab of the TD hero. Sadly it didn't count in the stats …. CLAYMORES 14-0 |
![]() |
The Dragons stumbled on O again - and the Claymores O kept it's TD streak alive on its next drive. Aided by a phantom roughing the passer call, a 31 yard Nall to Simonton pass had them in them in the red zone again. This time Hicks took advantage a big surge by the O-line and went in from 2 yards out. CLAYMORES 21-0 |
Then it was time for a wee bit of history. With Shane Stafford at QB, the Claymores continued their offensive dominance. Simonton and Hicks ripped off some nice gains to get the ball to the 5 yard line. There Stafford rolled out left as the Dragons closed in ... But somebody forgot to cover #81! So Shane calmly lofted a little floater right to Scott who cradled the pig for his historic 100th catch. It was also his 12th career TD catch - tying the record by the late Donald Sellers. Scott can't believe how easy it was. It was shades of Amsterdam 2000 when somebody forgot to cover him on a TD play as well. Shane tells Scott - "You were this wide open!". |
![]() |
Stafford wasn't done! After eventually punting, #14 led the Claymores back into the end zone with a 29 yard TD to Jon Minardi with 30 seconds left! CLAYMORES 35-0 (HT) |
If want to know what the face of coach whose team has just conceded 35 first half points while scoring zero looks like - this is it. Sorry Jack. (But he was a true gentleman after the game as always). |
![]() |
First half assessment by Montse. "RUBBISH!" The stats show total yardage: Claymores 338 vs Dragons 7. Has there been a more one sided pro football half in recent memory?
So with a comeback unlikely (the magic 25 point mark had been surpassed) it was time to break out the victory champagne! Many thanks to everybody for the great cake and booze! |
![]() |
Even an attempt to block the Ken Margerum and some other Claymores coaches getting back in the booth was the 2nd half was unsuccessful. Our suggestion to Ken that we'd call the plays for the 2nd half was met with a smile ... |
The Dragons did manage to cross midfield at the start of the 3rd quarter - but alas it was called back on a penalty and that was the end of that ... So the Claymores were back on offense, and surprise surprise - another TD! Ken Simonton had been 'held' out of the end zone for 30 mins - but his 2 yard TD 4 mins into the 3rd Q put an end to that. Great Uncle Bulgaria could have scored a TD with the size of hole the O-line were creating! CLAYMORES 42-0 |
![]() |
Simonton explodes through another hole. Ken has set a Claymores combined yardage record of 1,403 yards on the season. It would be a league record except for the great numbers being put by ex-Kansas State great David Allen in Berlin. Speaking of which ... |
![]() |
Since the rest of the game was pretty much 'chilling out' time, it gave us a chance to talk some serious K-State football with Ed and June - who were over from Manhattan, KS watching their son who is an assistant on the Claymores equipment staff. See you in Manhattan guys! |
![]() |
Craig Nall finished 14 of 16 for 207 yards and 2TD's which gave him a perfect 158.3 rating and extended his lead in the overall passer standings. He sat on the bench for the 4th quarter watching Rob Hart kick a 35 yard FG to extend the lead. CLAYMORES 45-0 |
![]() |
We were able to confirm that the sun does indeed shine out of the behinds of the Dragons cheerleaders ... |
![]() |
Poor Seth Burford tasted a lot of Catalan grass on this night as he sacked 7 times. (His night was to get worse - see below) 3 of those sacks were from Radell Lockhart who set a new club record. |
![]() |
You know it's a bad day when reliable WR Sean Morey can't even hang onto the ball. Sean's bounced around at the Dragons from WR to DB to WR again and has had a good year despite this folly. |
Just when we thought our 2nd shutout in 3 weeks was on the cards, WR Zak Parker got open on a 4th and 8 play and scored a 27 yard TD with 94 seconds left. FINAL CLAYMORES 45-7 |
Great job Scots! |
The smile was back! |
![]() |
Toni was smiling too - but FTP Lesley made sure to point out to Jon Minardi that he could have had a 3rd TD in the game had it not just eluded his grasp in the 4th quarter!
And so it was back to Sitges for some 'reserved' partying. The victory champagne was out again in the Sitges Sports Bar (thanks Miguel) and the players buffet was eaten once more (thanks Sean Morey for telling us to join him at the table). This was all mighty difficult to do, given that we've usually just lost the game - not whipped these guys butts... |
But with the help of FTP we made a night of it and tried to cheer up the poor Dragons guys. To find out exactly what was being whispered into Sandra's ear (or maybe not) please check out CLAYMORES FTP |
We were about the only Scottish folk in Barcelona who didn't sack Seth Burford on Saturday! Seth is a top bloke though and we've got our fingers crossed for him in San Diego!
However poor Seth sustained another injury when some flying glass from above caught his golden arm and induced a cut. Was there no end to this guy's bad day??? |
![]() |
Sunday The day after the Dragons were slaughtered, many other animals met the same fate as Sitges Sack helped organize a massive BBQ for the fans and players!
![]() |
Since the massive Sitges Sack banner didn't see much action on Saturday with only 1 TD scored, it was put to full use Sunday as a massive sun shade for the Scots! |
![]() |
And there was a little flag football to be played by those not nursing hangovers. Team Rubbish made it's debut. To find out how they got on, once again please check out CLAYMORES FTP |

Might as well show you another picture of the Dragons cheerleaders before we go.
