WEEK
10 - CLAYMORES 22 ADMIRALS 30
(Fri 17/6) Fly to Dusseldorf! A night out in Altstadt at Knoten Bar (again) and nothing is stolen! Woopy doo! A few Fire friends turn up to say hello, and we'll see them again in a few days after Amsterdam ... Crash back at the Renaissance after a semi-heavy night. Despite their only being only 4 beds between 9 people - we still manage not to use one of the beds, when the The Legend opts for the floor instead. Doh! |
(Sat 18/6) Train out to Amsterdam for the "Boyz Weekend"! |
First stop Teasers! It'll always be Hooters to us though! Where exactly is Chris's head going in this shot? |
We stagger out to the ArenA to find a bunch of familiar faces. Wild Bill Murphy and Ruul of course! |
It was time for that "10" pose again! Congratulations are in order to (L to R) Preston, Fraser, Gill, Mark and Shuggie. The latter 3 are on a streak of 30 straight games, while Preston and Fraser have completed the "10" for the second time! |
Talking of doing the "10" - what about this bastard in the middle? Ross managed to do a whopping 14 games on the road this year (and boy doesn't it show), challenging The Legend's record of 17. Ross's ability to appear wasted in every photo is a skill unmatched across NFLE. Meanwhile Ton (left) is still beaming after his out of body twins experience last week! |
Then there was a game to play! Could the Claymores stumble to .500? RB Jesse Haynes sweeps around left end for a big gain above. |
Alas, we spent most of the game berating the officials, especially #137 our personal favourite for the day. The anguish and frustration at another losing resulted in more foul language that we can only apologise for. Plus that f**kin duck mascot decided to spray our banner with water for the WHOLE game, causing the paint to run. Thanks a lot ... |
WEEK 10 CHEDDAR AWARDS MVP - WR Donald Sellers (5-97-1). He single handily led the 4th quarter fightback. First he catches a TD to make the score 30-20 with just over 2 mins to play. Then he grabs a 2-pointer. Then he recovers the onside kick. Then he makes a key grab on the potential game tying drive, followed by a near miss in getting in bounds at the back of the end zone. The next pass was intercepted ... Oh, and he also finally blocked a punt after promising to do so all season. Defensive Merit - CB Cliff Shamburger finally played a decent game, grabbing his first 2 INT's of the season, and getting a sack on a corner blitz. The Shon Bell Award - No catches again - plus an INT on a pass intended for him. We make it 3 INT's have come from passes to Bell since he last made a grab back in Week 6! |
| So it's 4 and 6 baby! What a downer - after a season that promised so much. It was a tough 4 weeks watching it all fall apart - but the truth was, it was lost in Barcelona after blowing the 28-3 lead. Getting swept by the Admirals was just icing on the cake, and condemned us to 5th place, with only lowly Berlin below us. 6th to 5th in one season - quite a ride! |
Re-cheddared! After the last shot got "stolen" we wished Dameyune well for his trip to Carolina with our traditional greeting. Little did we know we'd run into him again the next day ... |
Jim and Anne get a end of season cheddaring also! It's not farewell though - Jim will be back to prove all his critics wrong next year! |
Game MVP Sellers. Good luck in the NFL Don! |
After the game we stumbled back to the Globe where we all were staying in a couple of dorms, only to find out that some of lockers had been broken into and some of our luggage had been gone through. Only clothes and World Bowl tickets were lifted, but it put a real downer on the evening, with most of our group preferring to stay with the luggage rather than go out. It was on this night that the "Jobby Joker" was born - a playing card of such foul magnitude that it cannot be described here. Suffice to say that JJ stayed with us most of the week, and was last seen leaving with Andy Colvin at the World Bowl! Don't print it in the Sun Andy! The Cheddars did go out and do Teasers the best they could though. Buoyed by an Irish contingency, Preston got up on that famed table, following Ton's fearless footsteps and shook some Cheddar booty! A decent end to a pretty miserable day. |
Sun (14/6) A new hotel - the Botel. And then just a day of chilling out, or so we thought ... |
Jock and Shuggie enjoy some coffee in a coffee shop - the clowns! Others didn't decide to take this unconventional choice of beverage and thus some very good feelings returned! |
Then later in the afternoon we went for a stroll back into the Red Light District, when we unexpectedly ran into Dameyune and some other Claymores, just as they were about to enter a live sex show. At their invitation we decided to pop in and take in some local culture. Inside we pretty much had the whole place to us - that's 9 Claymore fans and a bunch of players (in the Andy Colvin tradition I won't name names, #2, #12, #35, #59, #67, #90, #91 and #92 were all spotted). After a couple of shows, most of the guys left to chants of "Claymores, Claymores!", but 3 remained - Dameyune and the 2 Japanese guys. Some more shows followed, until Dameyune volunteered poor Tsjui for the stage. Sadly Haruhito was wearing elastic waist pants, so Dameyune had to donate his leather belt to the girl so she could tie up our Japanese friend! Again, the chant of "Claymores, Claymores" threatened to lift the roof right off. Poor Horiguchi was dying with laughter at this stage. But the show went on! Haruhito was a good sport and nothing happened that shouldn't (except for the Cheddars shooting a picture at Horiguchi's insistence that will make it's way out to Japan). Good clean fun - OK? However we couldn't let Dameyune get away so easy, and we forced him to autograph all 9 tickets of our tickets - otherwise we were on the phone to George Seifert in the morning! |
Signed "game" ticket from Dameyune Craig! |
After all that fun, it was off to the Muralto Bar for the Admirals end of season BBQ and drinking games extravaganza! |
And that meant of course properly inducting Al Luginbill into the Cheddar Hall of Fame! Suzy and Al were in great form as always! Al's best moment came when he was reading out the voting process for entry into the hall - "... the voting will be rigged and completely fixed". When we suggested that this was just like NFL Europe everybody went into hysterics! It's been a tough season in Amsterdam for Al, but we're glad he's through it OK and will be back in 2000! |
Silvio Diliberto, Preston, the Fans are Friends Banner and Ross. Preston is seen here reminding Silvio about that roughing the kicker play in Hampden. The Banner was never seen again after this day - it never made it to the World Bowl for it's supposed pre-game demonstration. Ross, once again, looks wasted. |
After the BBQ it was back into town for more thrills! Alas, "what goes on the road, stays on the road" so pages and pages of stories that could be told are withheld here. Sorry! But we will say that offensive co-ordinator Vince Alcalde did a marvellous job of calling the plays later that night in Teasers! |
Mon (15/6) Another "chill-out" day in Amsterdam. More great stories - not to be told! |
Tue (16/6) |
Train to Dusseldorf! |
