BOWL 99 - Part I
Dusseldorf - site of World Bowl 99! |
For several weeks now there have been banners and flags all over the city advertising the game. Even at the airport there were major signs greeting you to the World Bowl city. Hats off to the league for doing a great job promoting the game! |

Tue (22/6) Arrive in Dusseldorf (from Amsterdam) and take ALL our bags and possessions to the Knoten Bar (where we had stuff stolen in W5) for "World Bowl Talk". Every Tuesday, the Fire normally send down a couple of players to the bar, and the fans get to ask them all sort of questions in an organised forum. However since the Fire team had to leave town, to make way for the Dragons in their hotel, the idea was to send down one player each from the Galaxy and Dragons. Frankfurt decided to send WR Mario Bailey - their unquestioned superstar who has ruled the league for 5 years now. Good choice. Who did Barcelona decide to send? Bouman, Phillips or Maslowski? No chance. The Dragons send down an O-lineman who turns out to be none other than ... |

Deron Thorp - The Cheddar Monster! (see week 8) |
The "World Bowl Talk" was quite lively (when Deron entered we gave out a monster cry of "SHEEPSHAGGER" which must have perplexed most of the Fire fans). Most of the discussion centring on Frankfurt's or rather Ralf Kleinmann's inability to beat the Dragons last week and thus secure the Fire a WB berth. Mario was good chat, trying to sway the Fire fans into cheering for the Purple on Sunday, by saying he cheered for Fire in the 97 WB against the Dragons! But the Fire fans were not to be swayed! Deron all this time seemed far too quiet, so it was up to the Cheddars to awaken the Monster. Preston: "How do you think the nightclubs compare between Dusseldorf and Sitges?" Deron: "No comment!" Shuggie: [responding to Deron's comment that the Scottish fans would cheer for Dragons also] "What do you like to call the Scottish fans normally - something about sheep?" Deron: "No comment!" We can't believe the big guy went so shy! |

Tuesday night at Knoten. A small hardcore has already pledged to see the whole week's of planned activities! And there was a lot planned! |

Isa and Markus from Knoten. These guys have been special to us all year, especially after a few mishaps along the way. Their kindness through thick and thin is most appreciated and we look forward to getting back to your bar in 2000! |
